Saranthangi: One More Model Village in India

April 14th, 2010 · 2 Comments

It was October 2, 2008 I wrote about a village Kasangadu. The manufacture and sale of alcohol is banned in the village for the last 63 years. Yesterday (13th April 2010), Dinamalar, a Tamil Newspaper reported that two villages (that are 20 kms from Madurai) have banned alcohol in their villages and fine Rs 1000 to those who drink alcohol and reward Rs 500 to those who inform the village head about the drunkards. They also consider theft as serious and guilty are punished on behalf of the village. POLICE IS NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER THE VILLAGE AND ALL THE ISSUES ARE CONTROLLED BY THE VILLAGE ITSELF. The news says there is a good cooperation among the villagers to these rules.

You must be anxious to know the name of the village. It is SARANTHANGI and PARAIPPATTI. These villages are in Vadipatti Taluk, Madurai District. Saranthangi village is between Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Meenakshi Ashram and Palamedu (famous for Jallikkattu, catching bulls). I feel proud of this village and the developments. I am confident more and more villages will line-up under this category. On my part, I would report about these villages as I come to know about them.

Spread this news to your near and dear friends. Let  us make India free from alcohol and other related crimes, road accidents, eve-teasing etc.
